Gubbins' unbeaten century puts Hampshire 225 ahead at Grace Road
Nick Gubbins stood firm for an unbeaten 124 as Hampshire took control against Leicestershire on day two at Grace Road.
Hampshire closed on 255-3 in their second innings on 16 September, leading by 225 runs. That is a strong position in a four-day County Championship match, where each side bats twice and the team ahead has more room to push for a win. BBC Sport
Day one belonged to the bowlers. Seventeen wickets fell on the opening day, with Leicestershire finishing on 148-7 overnight.
The first innings stayed tight. Hampshire made 214, with captain Ben Brown unbeaten on 80. Ian Holland did the damage for Leicestershire with 6-38, a career-best return. Leicestershire replied with 244 for a slim 30-run lead, thanks to 63 from Hamza Shaikh and 53 not out from Tom Scriven. Kyle Abbott led Hampshire's reply with 4-58.
Hampshire's second innings was a different story. Gubbins and Felix Organ opened with a 104-run stand to wipe out the deficit and then build the lead. Gubbins reached his hundred from 190 balls with 13 fours.
It was his first County Championship hundred since April last year. He was still there at stumps — the end of the day's play — with Hampshire three wickets down and two days left in the game.
The match at Uptonsteel Grace Road in Leicester, played from 15 to 18 September, is part of the Rothesay County Championship Division One 2026. Leicestershire won the toss and chose to bowl first.
What makes this stand out is the swing. After two innings where no team passed 250, one calm batter has changed the shape of the match. Leicestershire now need early wickets on day three. Hampshire will want to stretch that 225-run lead into something much harder to chase.
