The Switch 2 exclusive sat at No. 13 on Metacritic's list of the best games of 2026 at the time of publication, according to GameSpot. That score is a weighted average drawn from critic reviews. It is a strong start for a new entry in a long-running strategy role-playing series, where players direct small armies in turn-by-turn battles.
The game was developed by Intelligent Systems. GameSpot described it in its review as the new high point to beat for future entries, while other critics called it one of the best games of 2026, according to Vice.
The setup is simple. Players create a protagonist named Eshmel, who is sent back in time to guide four heroes known as the Flame Lords during an event called the Heroic Games. The winner is promised a single wish. Across that journey, players travel through time to gather allies and defeat the demon god Balor, according to Metacritic.
