Netflix releases trailer for Sacrifice with Taylor-Joy and Evans

Evans plays a fading movie star. He attends an environmental gala, a glitzy charity event on a Greek island, as listed by Netflix. The invitation promises attention. It delivers trouble.
He and two other guests are taken hostage. Their captor is Joan, played by Taylor-Joy, with her radical followers, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The group believes a volcanic event will cleanse the planet.
Joan has chosen him. Her plan is to throw Evans's character into a volcano, as reported by Netflix Tudum. Netflix frames his situation in stark terms elsewhere, as a down-on-his-luck movie star who lands the heroic role of a lifetime when a volcanic doomsday cult takes him hostage.
The wider cast includes Vincent Cassel, Sam Richardson, John Malkovich and Salma Hayek Pinault. Gavras co-wrote the script with Will Arbery, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The story moves between the star, his fellow hostages and the cult closing in.
Sacrifice premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025. Netflix describes it as a mythical dark comedy from Gavras, a story built around myth and played for dark laughs, as reported by Netflix Tudum. The festival organisers use a different label, calling it a satirical thriller in which an environmental conference is disrupted, according to TIFF.
