Intocable plays Zócalo for 300,000 on Mexico's Independence Day
About 300,000 people filled Mexico City's Zócalo on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026, as Intocable headlined the Independence Day celebrations.
The square, formally the Plaza de la Constitución, hosted the musical programme before the Grito de Independencia, the traditional shout ceremony that marks the start of Mexico's fight for independence. This year's ceremony marked the 216th anniversary and was led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, according to Billboard.
The show was free to attend. The Mexico City government billed Intocable as the star concert act for its Fiestas Patrias programme, with artistic activities in the square starting at 17:15 and Intocable due on stage at 21:45, according to the Mexico City government. City Head of Government Clara Brugada had confirmed the band would lead the entertainment for the Grito on the night of Sept. 15. A comprehensive security operation was organised for the celebrations.
A Presidency press release confirms the Zócalo hosted musical presentations by Intocable prior to the Grito ceremony. The Culture Secretariat said Canal Veintidós would carry live coverage of the Sept. 15 ceremony.
For frontman Ricky Muñoz, the date carried extra weight. He turned 51 on Sept. 15.
"Being able to celebrate on Mexico's most important date is pure poetry," Muñoz told the crowd. Then, more simply: "Mexico, truly, thank you so much. You can't imagine what this night means to us."
Muñoz told the audience that Mexico had catapulted Intocable to what the band is today. The invitation had come from President Sheinbaum herself a year earlier.
The band was co-founded by drummer René Muñoz in Zapata, Texas, 36 years ago. Zapata sits just north of the US-Mexico border, and the group has built its career across both countries.
The crowd figure puts the night among the largest recent gatherings in the square. Official figures cited by Billboard put attendance at about 300,000. Shakira holds the mark for the largest free concert at the venue, with 400,000 attendees earlier in 2026. Los Fabulosos Cadillacs drew 300,000 in 2023, while Grupo Firme gathered 280,000 in 2022.
What makes this stand out is the slot itself. The Grito is a national ceremony first and a concert second. To play it is to play for the whole country at once.
