Jessica Chastain Joins Netflix Drama The Retrievals

Jessica Chastain has closed a deal to join The Retrievals, Netflix’s new drama from Maid and Sirens creator Molly Smith Metzler, as reported by Deadline.

Chastain will play Kaitlyn Langford, a former art historian going through fertility treatment. She becomes the third lead confirmed for the series. The casting was reported on 16 September.

She joins Emilia Jones and Amy Ryan, who were previously announced. Jones will play Gabby Clemente, a fellow patient. Ryan will play Carla Russo, a nurse at the Yale Fertility Center who pleaded guilty to diverting fentanyl.

The series is inspired by Susan Burton’s Peabody Award-winning New York Times podcast of the same name. It centres on IVF patients who underwent egg-retrieval procedures without anaesthesia after the drug intended for their sedation was stolen. The patients later brought a lawsuit against Yale University over the events.

Behind the camera, Metzler serves as showrunner — the writer-producer in overall charge of a series — as well as writer and executive producer. The show is produced by LuckyChap and Quiet Coyote. Lila Neugebauer will direct the pilot, the first episode that sets the look and tone.

What makes this stand out for viewers is the shape of the ensemble. Three women sit at the centre of the story: two patients seeking treatment, and the nurse whose actions affected their care. Chastain, Jones and Ryan each arrive with screen credits across film and television, and their roles put the human cost of the real case firmly in focus.
