Chelsea have one owner again. Clearlake Capital has taken full control of the club after buying out Todd Boehly, Mark Walter and Hansjorg Wyss.

The deal ends four years of shared power at Stamford Bridge. Each of the three sellers held a 12.8% stake, while Clearlake previously owned 61.5%. Those shares now all sit with Clearlake, BBC Sport reported on 16 September.

Boehly will also leave his role as chairman. He has held the post since 2022, when the consortium bought the club. Clearlake is led by co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, who now steer Chelsea without a co-owner alongside them.

The change closes the book on the 2022 takeover. That consortium paid £2.3bn to buy Chelsea from Roman Abramovich. Under that agreement, Boehly and Clearlake shared joint control and an equal say on big decisions.

Boehly kept real weight in that system. All major club decisions needed his formal sign-off, with veto power as co-controlling owner. Chelsea's own newsroom now lists a club announcement titled 'Chelsea FC announces ownership transition'.

Talk of a buyout had been building for weeks. In August, Boehly and Walter were reported to be in talks to sell to Clearlake. By 10 September, Clearlake was reported to be close to buying them out in a deal that valued Chelsea at around £5bn, The Guardian reported.

For fans, this means a simpler chain of command. No more joint control. No more two camps having to agree. One ownership group picks the direction, hires and fires, and answers for results.

What makes this stand out is the scale of the reset. Chelsea swapped a famous long-term owner for a group in 2022. Now that group has become one. The noise around the boardroom should drop. The focus returns to the pitch.
