Gina Rodriguez to Direct Boxing Film House of Guerrero
Gina Rodriguez will make her feature directing debut with House of Guerrero, a boxing drama now in preproduction. The details were reported by The Hollywood Reporter on 16 September 2026. No cast has been announced yet.
The film centres on a once-promising young boxer aiming to return to the ring and reclaim the life he had hoped to build. It was written by Bernardo Cubria. Cubria developed the original story with Rodriguez.
The project reunites Rodriguez with Justin Baldoni. They last worked together on Jane the Virgin, where they played Jane Villanueva and Rafael Solano. It is their first collaboration since that series.
This time the roles are different. Baldoni is producing with Andrew Calof for Wayfarer Studios. Rodriguez is also producing, as first reported by Deadline. Molly Breeskin is producing for Rodriguez’s I Can And I Will Productions banner.
Scott Budnick and Ameet Shukla are producing for 1Community. Steve Sarowitz and Jamey Heath are executive producers for Wayfarer. Sherrese Clarke and Niija Kuykendall are executive producers for HarbourView Media Group, a senior credit often tied to financing or creative oversight.
The cost is shared. Wayfarer Studios, 1Community, HarbourView Media Group and Clare LoCicero are co-financing the film, meaning they split the production bill. Three Point Capital is providing tax credit financing, which is lending secured against tax incentives the production expects to receive.
Preproduction is the build-up before cameras roll. Crews are hired, locations are locked and the budget is finalised. Fight work is already assigned, with Clayton J. Barber and Eric Brown leading fight choreography.
That team handles training, staging and camera-safe boxing. The aim is action that looks real while keeping performers protected. It is a specialist job on any boxing film.
UTA Independent Film Group is handling worldwide sales. In plain terms, it will offer distribution rights to buyers territory by territory. Those deals decide where the film will reach screens.
What makes this stand out is the swap in positions. Rodriguez steps behind the camera for her first cinema film as director. Baldoni, once her co-star, backs the project as a producer. For fans, this means a familiar pairing returns in new roles.
