Al Gore's Calm Take on AI Data Centers and Climate

Al Gore told TechCrunch in an interview published September 16, 2026 that emissions from AI data centers should not keep people up at night. He spoke with Lila Preston, head of growth equity at Generation Investment Management, about the backlash against AI infrastructure buildout TechCrunch.

Gore put the direct climate footprint in proportion. All AI data centers combined, he said, produce only a fraction of the emissions from uncovered landfills around the world. For readers who follow training clusters, the large systems used to teach AI models, inference fleets, the systems that run those models for users, and power usage effectiveness, a measure of how efficiently a data center uses energy, the point is where to focus concern. AI computing creates carbon emissions, but those emissions sit inside a much larger list of unmanaged sources.

That view came with a clear qualification about power supply. Gore told TechCrunch it is a matter of deep concern that some hyperscalers, the very large cloud companies, are turning to new methane turbines. He said he prefers data centers to meet their energy needs with renewables and batteries. The difference is between adding on-site plants that burn fossil fuel for years and buying power tied to wind, solar and storage.

Gore also offered a political reading of local opposition. He told TechCrunch that part of the growing bipartisan opposition to data centers in the U.S. comes from deeper worries about job losses and other threats described by experts inside OpenAI and Anthropic. Permits, noise, water use and electricity rates are the visible disputes. Concern about displaced workers and larger risks from AI systems sits underneath.

The September comments match his position earlier this year. In May 2026, Gore described AI data centers as a "cause for deep concern, but not panic." He returned to the theme at a Tennessee conference on renewable energy, data centers and the climate crisis, where he said the underlying problem is the global spike in energy use Tennessee Lookout. There he said it is not practical to try to stop the AI revolution, and said he is hopeful market forces will push data centers toward renewable energy sources regardless of government policy.

Gore has also approached the issue from the measurement side. Climate TRACE, a nonprofit he co-founded, launched a tool that uses AI to track fine particulate pollution TechCrunch. Gore has said 99% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide are now measured across 660 million point-source emission sites. The broader context here is the gap between global totals and local grids. A data center campus can be small in worldwide carbon terms and still be large for a single utility area, a rate case that sets electricity prices, or a local planning decision. Methane turbines solve the local power shortage quickly while making the global problem harder, because they add on-site gas generation that can run for a long time.

In my view, Gore is trying to avoid a mistake I have watched through the PC, mobile and cloud cycles. Each wave brought warnings that building more infrastructure was itself the danger, followed by a slower understanding that how that infrastructure is powered and governed mattered more than whether it was built. His bet is that economics, not only policy, will pull large operators toward renewables and batteries. If clean power buying gets easier, grid connections improve and longer storage improves, that hopeful path is technically workable. If gas turbines become the standard fix, the calm view becomes harder to hold.
