Snap is introducing Specs Intelligence, a new AI assistant launching alongside Specs, its first consumer pair of augmented reality glasses. The assistant is available in preview on iOS, with a waitlist open for a full early-access experience on Mac. The Verge

Specs Intelligence builds an understanding of goals, priorities, relationships and routines from apps and tools the user chooses to connect. That personal context carries across devices and deepens over time. It is designed to anticipate when help would be useful and surface relevant information and actions without waiting for a prompt.

On Specs, the assistant can pull personal content into view when relevant, such as a daily briefing before work. Its first connections include Gmail and Slack, drawing on messages, schedules and other user-approved sources to inform its responses.

Under the hood, it uses a proprietary mix of open-source models hosted in the US alongside local LLMs, or AI models that run directly on the device. Snap says it cannot view or access personal content used with Specs Intelligence. The hardware thesis is specific. SPECS are fully standalone with no puck or tether, which Snap positions as more capable than AI glasses and more wearable than headsets. Specs development sits inside Specs Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Snap dedicated to making computing more human. Snap states it has worked for over a decade on eyewear to that end, and said it planned to launch the new Specs in 2026. Snap operates Snapchat, a visual messaging app for relationships with friends, family and the world. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel has said the Specs glasses are part of the company's long-term strategy.

The broader context here is the shift from reactive chatbots to proactive, permissioned agents. The hard problem is less writing the next word than keeping memory in sync across devices, pulling together information spread across different work apps, and deciding when not to interrupt. That requires persistent memory, cross-device sync, and clear rules for proactivity. Trust has to be built into the system itself, not just a policy page.

In my view, the architecture Snap is describing is the compromise to watch. Hosted open-source models paired with local LLMs keep heavy reasoning in US infrastructure while fast or sensitive work stays on device. I have watched my own children ignore powerful tools that required explicit prompting and adopt weaker ones that surfaced help at the right moment. If Snap can make the briefing, the pre-meeting pull, and the in-view nudge reliable without letting personal content leak into training or ads, it will have solved a harder problem than rendering. That would make glasses useful on ordinary workdays, not only demos.
