Specs work as a standalone computer. No phone, compute puck, a separate processor box, or external battery is required. Snap describes the device as an ultra-powerful wearable computer built into lightweight glasses with see-through lenses.

The frames use high-performance Swiss TR90 polymer, a tough, light eyewear plastic. Buyers choose Narrow Fit at 47mm or Wide Fit at 52mm. That choice covers interpupillary fit, the spacing between the eyes, and lens aperture, the size of the viewing area.

Specs use waveguide displays, thin glass that directs light into the eye, rated for 16 million colors with sharp, high-resolution images. Input is by hand tracking, including pinch-and-drag to resize windows. Power is rated for four hours, which limits continuous untethered sessions.

The Verge tested the hardware at Snap's offices, including a shared game of virtual dominoes on a real table with another Specs wearer. The session uses co-located spatial anchoring, where both devices agree on placement in the room, fast photon-to-motion response to keep images steady, and multi-user sync between two standalone devices.

The consumer unit follows more than half a decade of AR work, including two prior generations for a small number of developers. The direct predecessor was the fifth generation of Spectacles, see-through standalone glasses running Snap OS. Snap said in June 2025 that lightweight, immersive Specs would launch in 2026, and expanded its strategic collaboration with Qualcomm in connection with Specs.

The broader context here is tradeoffs, not a phone replacement. Standalone design removes pairing friction for buyers and developers. It also keeps heat, compute load and power draw in the frame. Four hours suits development, field testing and short shared sessions, not all-day wear. The $2,195 price and $200 reservation point to prosumer and developer-first hardware sold to consumers.

In my view, that focus is sensible. I have watched my own children adopt new platforms in short bursts around specific social tasks, and shared tabletop play like Snap showed fits that pattern. If Specs gain ground, it will be through short, shared, spatially anchored sessions that phones handle poorly, without pairing overhead. The longer bet is that those sessions expand as waveguides get brighter, batteries get denser and chips run cooler.
