Duncan Sheik in critical but stable condition, family asks for privacy

Duncan Sheik, the United States singer-songwriter known for the 1996 single “Barely Breathing,” is receiving medical care and remains in critical but stable condition.

The update came in a statement posted to Sheik’s social media account, as reported by Rolling Stone on 17 September 2026. The statement said he continues to receive care. His family said further medical details will not be shared at this time.

The family asked for privacy. That request was included in the social media statement. They gave no timetable for further updates.

No cause has been given. The reason Sheik required medical care is not currently clear, and no other details about his treatment have been confirmed. That gap is common in early statements about serious illness, when families choose to keep treatment private.

Sheik released his self-titled debut album in 1996. The record included “Barely Breathing.” A self-titled album is one named after the artist himself.

The single reached Number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, the main singles chart in the United States. It then remained on the charts for 55 consecutive weeks, a run of more than a year without a break. The chart ranks the most-bought and most-played songs in the country each week.

That long chart presence helped the single to gold certification, a sales-based award rather than a critical prize, according to Rolling Stone. The recording also brought Sheik a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, one of the annual awards decided by the US Recording Academy. A nomination means a place on the shortlist, not a win.

In later years Sheik worked extensively beyond pop releases. He composed the score for A Home at the End of the World, the 2004 film drama. A score is the original music written to sit behind the action on screen.

He then wrote the music and orchestration for Spring Awakening, described as a rock musical. The show opened on Broadway in 2006, in New York’s main commercial theatre district, where large-scale musicals and plays run in major houses. Orchestration covers how songs are arranged for the instruments heard in the theatre.

For many listeners, that history explains why the news has travelled quickly. “Barely Breathing” spent more than a year on the charts, so it reached audiences well beyond its first weeks of release. His later theatre work then brought him to a different audience in a different setting.
