Duncan Sheik in hospital in critical but stable condition, family says

Duncan Sheik, the singer-songwriter known for the 1996 single “Barely Breathing”, is in hospital in critical but stable condition.

His family disclosed his condition in a statement posted to Instagram on Sept. 16, as reported by Billboard. The message is the clearest account so far of the seriousness of his illness, after weeks in which there had been only indirect signs of an extended hospital stay.

The statement did not give a reason for his hospitalisation. The cause remained undisclosed at the time of reporting on Sept. 17. His family said it would not release further medical details for now.

The family also asked for privacy while he continues to receive care. That request means there may be few further updates in the near term. No timetable for additional information has been given.

Sheik, 56, had himself pointed to a prolonged period in hospital through his own social media activity. He had been sharing posts on Instagram that indicated an ongoing hospital stay since at least Aug. 20. Sheik first reached a wide audience as a pop recording artist in the mid-1990s. His debut single, “Barely Breathing”, was released in 1996 and reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, the weekly ranking of the most popular songs in the United States. The chart is compiled by Billboard from sales, airplay and, in later years, streaming activity, and a Top 20 placing there marked him as a national radio presence at the time.

The recording also earned him recognition from the US recording industry. It brought a nomination at the Grammy Awards, the annual honours voted on by members of the US Recording Academy, according to the Daily Beast.

He later established a parallel career writing for the stage. He composed the music for Spring Awakening, the rock musical adapted from the 19th-century German play of the same name. The production opened on Broadway in 2006.

For that work, Sheik received two Tony Awards, the annual prizes that recognise excellence in Broadway theatre. He won for best original score, which honours the music written for a show, and for best orchestration, which honours the arrangement of that music for the stage band.
