Real Madrid push to sign JJ Gabriel after Man Utd teen asks to leave
Real Madrid are pushing hard to sign JJ Gabriel, the 15-year-old Manchester United forward who has asked to cancel his academy registration.
Gabriel, who turns 16 on 6 October, has sent United formal notice that he wants to leave with immediate effect, according to BBC Sport. United can challenge that request. His current registration runs to the end of the season.
It is a tug-of-war over a player most casual fans have barely seen. Gabriel is a forward who came through United's academy and made his senior debut this summer. Head coach Michael Carrick gave him the final eight minutes of a pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm, a 2-1 United win. Carrick later called him a "big talent".
The fallout has been swift. Gabriel was not training with United at the time of the report. Sources close to the teenager say they feel let down by unkept promises about his pathway to the first team.

Real Madrid's interest is described as strong by multiple sources. The Spanish club want to recruit him immediately and place him with Real Madrid Castilla, their recognised reserve team. Castilla play senior men's football in Spain's regionalised third tier, a common proving ground for top prospects.
There is a familiar face at the top. Castilla were coached last season by Alvaro Arbeloa, who has since taken over Real Madrid's senior side following Xabi Alonso's dismissal.
Madrid are not alone. Barcelona, Paris St-Germain and Bayern Munich all hold firm interest, while Chelsea have major interest from England. Gabriel holds an EU passport, which eases the paperwork for a move abroad at 16.
