Pittsburgh Alzheimer's Study Faces 90-Day Shutdown After NIH Grant Cut

600 older adults in Pittsburgh may never receive their individual cognitive test results after the Trump administration canceled their Alzheimer's study grant in August.
The shutdown order allows 90 days to wind down work that had been scheduled to run more than five months longer. The team holds the test data but lacks the funded time and staff to validate and share results collected after the cutoff, according to The Guardian.
The project was led by Tamara Dubowitz with co-investigator Andrea Rosso, an associate professor of epidemiology and brain health specialist at the University of Pittsburgh. It enrolled aging residents of two low-income, majority-Black neighborhoods to examine how built and social environments, from housing and streets to social networks, contribute to Alzheimer's risk. Both neighborhoods were historically redlined, areas denied mortgages, loans or insurance on the basis of race. The design linked those neighborhood-level exposures to cognitive phenotyping, or detailed profiling of memory and thinking, in a high-risk, underrepresented population.
The National Institutes of Health terminated two University of Pittsburgh grants on Alzheimer's-related risk factors in early August. For the Dubowitz-Rosso cohort, the 90-day closeout compresses data cleaning, adjudication and return of results to participants into an unfunded interval. Adjudication here means careful checking and scoring of tests. Researchers said they cannot complete assessment of data gathered around the cancellation point. The window is 90 days. The result is a break in longitudinal follow-up, or tracking the same people over time, and in the ethical loop of reporting back to participants.
Black Americans are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's disease as white Americans. That disparity was central to the study rationale. Federal cancellations elsewhere have included work on racism and brain health, according to The Guardian. Dementia research more broadly faced freezes, delays and revocations of federal support, as reported by Scientific American.
The Pittsburgh researchers are named plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit against the NIH alleging the administration censored research whose conclusions it disfavored. The case is one front in a larger disruption. More than 5,700 NIH medical research grants were canceled, frozen or otherwise disrupted over the last two years, according to Grant Witness tracking, with more than 4,500 subsequently restored. Cancellation of clinical trials alone affected more than 74,000 participants nationally, according to a JAMA study. The administration had earlier proposed cutting the NIH budget by $18 billion, a 40% reduction to $27 billion, according to Reuters.
The broader context here is the fragility of cohort infrastructure once continuous funding lapses. Research on environmental causes depends on sustained observation, geocoded exposure histories that map where people lived, and repeated cognitive measures. Like a time-lapse film stopped early, a truncated closeout preserves specimens and raw scores but loses interpretive value. For participants who contributed time and health information on the understanding they would receive personal results, the loss is procedural as well as scientific.
Looking at what this means for the field, the immediate questions are replicability and trust. Restored grants do not automatically restore enrollment, retention or community partnerships in redlined neighborhoods where research skepticism has structural roots. Litigation may clarify the legal bounds of grant termination. It will not reconstruct interrupted time series. For experts tracking health equity, environmental neurology and federal science policy, the Pittsburgh closure illustrates how funding volatility translates into missing data at exactly the exposure-disease interface the study was built to capture.
