Hull FC release Arthur Romano to return to France
Hull FC have released Arthur Romano so he can return to France. The 29-year-old asked to leave on compassionate grounds.
The club confirmed the early exit on 17 September. He is released from the remainder of his contract to be closer to home and to his young family in France, BBC Sport reported.
Romano joined Hull only last September. He signed a two-year deal after moving from Catalans Dragons. That means he departs a year early.
He made 15 appearances for Hull. He scored two tries. In league, a try, grounding the ball over the tryline, is worth four points and is the main way to score.
Hull say his story in England is not quite finished yet. The club expects him to take up an opportunity with another Super League club in 2027. Super League is rugby league's top flight, with clubs in England and France.
Because Romano was still under contract, Hull will receive compensation. In simple terms, his next club pays a fee to sign a player who was still tied down. Hull confirmed that payment as part of the deal, via Hull FC.
Hull have not publicly named that next team. The Hull Daily Mail had earlier reported a return to Catalans Dragons was on the cards. Catalans, based in Perpignan in the south of France, are Romano's former club.
There is international rugby ahead for him too. Romano was named in France's squad for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup. Hull announced his selection this week on social media.
He gives France options out wide. Romano can play centre or wing. Centres work in midfield as runners and link players. Wingers finish moves near the touchline, where space is tight.
Compassionate releases work differently from a straight transfer. The club waives the rest of the deal. The player is free to move home, while the club keeps a right to a fee for losing a contracted player.
What makes this stand out is the human weight behind the paperwork. A two-year plan lasted one season. The pull of home proved stronger.
