Hulu Developing The Mafia Nanny Drama With Charlize Theron Producing
Hulu is developing a drama series based on The Mafia Nanny, Webtoon's action-romance webcomic, with Charlize Theron attached as an executive producer. Deadline reported the project on 17 September 2026.
The show is in development, meaning Hulu is backing the writing and producing team but has not yet ordered episodes to air. That early stage is common in television. A project must earn a series order before cameras roll and a release date is set.
At this point the focus is scripts, attachments and creative direction rather than filming. Episode counts and release dates are usually fixed later, only if a full series is ordered. 20th Television is the studio behind the development.
Writer Max Gill wrote the television adaptation and will serve as an executive producer, a senior role that covers creative decisions and day-to-day business on a show. Those credits matter because they show which companies sit behind a series and who steers it.
The story centres on Davina, an elite nanny assigned to young Mikey Angelini and his father. The original webcomic blends action and romance around that household. No casting was included in the initial announcement.
Theron produces alongside Beth Kono, AJ Dix and Matt Maher, as well as Gill. The credit list also includes David Madden and Sera Tabb, who executive produce for Webtoon Productions. Dawn Olmstead executive produces for Steady Collective.
The producing line-up reflects how the project came together. Theron's company Secret Menu optioned The Mafia Nanny, meaning it secured the screen rights, while Olmstead was running the company. Olmstead has since moved on to lead Steady Collective and remains with the series in that new role.
The source material brings a large online audience. The webcomic was created by Violet Matter and illustrated by sh00, Roususu and Drawniels. It has amassed 420 million global views, according to Deadline, a figure covering worldwide readership of the webcomic. Webtoon and Wattpad are both owned by South Korea's Naver.
