Jesse Calhoun Indicted in Sixth Death: What the New Charge Means
Jesse Calhoun was indicted on a charge of first-degree manslaughter in the death of Elizabeth “Libby” Gibson. Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez announced the indictment in the week of September 17, 2026. A grand jury (a panel of citizens that decides if there is enough evidence for a charge) approved it. The case now involves six alleged victims, after five killings between 2022 and 2023. Gibson lived in Portland. She was 32 when she was last seen in 2022 and was reported missing in 2023. Authorities believe she was killed on or around November 18, 2022. Her body has not been found.
The new charge alleges Calhoun caused Gibson’s death acting “unlawfully and recklessly under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life.” That language sets it apart from the charges he already faces. Calhoun is 41 years old.
Calhoun had already been charged in the killings of Ashley Real, 22, Kristin Smith, 22, Charity Perry, 24, Bridget Webster, 31, and Joanna Speaks, 32. Prosecutors describe the five women as Portland area women. He has pleaded not guilty to five counts of second-degree murder (a killing that was intentional but not planned in advance) and four counts of abuse of a corpse. Prosecutors plan to try all murder charges in one trial rather than separate proceedings, like combining separate chapters into one book.
Calhoun’s criminal history predates the homicide investigation. He was previously incarcerated for assaulting a police officer, attempting to strangle a police dog, burglary and other charges. He was released early from prison in 2021 for helping fight wildfires through a prison program. That early release was reversed in 2023 after he came under investigation for the women’s deaths.
The next step is set. The broader context here is prosecutorial consolidation and timing. Trying multiple homicide counts together allows the state to present a course of conduct in a single forum. At the same time, the court must manage joinder, rules on what evidence can be shared across counts, and fairness to the defense. Adding manslaughter to second-degree murder charges also gives the jury a distinct legal theory to weigh. With no body recovered, the path to a unified trial will test how circumstantial evidence is linked across victims and time periods.
