Brooklyn's Ilana Savdie meets Chaïm Soutine in Tribeca pairing
A Brooklyn painter born in 1986 is showing side by side with a painter born almost a century earlier.
Norr Cohan in Tribeca, New York, has paired new paintings by Ilana Savdie with works by Chaïm Soutine in an exhibition titled “Savdie / Soutine”, according to Artnet News. The gallery is run by owner David Norr.
The show opened on September 10 at 48 Walker St and is on view through October 24. Details are listed on the gallery’s exhibition page, which is hosted at jamescohan.com.
Savdie is based in Brooklyn. She was born in 1986 and raised between Miami and Colombia. The Tribeca show centres on her new paintings.
Her career has moved quickly. She received the Creative Capital Award in 2025. She has held solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and at White Cube.
Her work is already in major public collections. Those include the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
Soutine lived from 1893 to 1943. That gap in lifetimes is the point.
What makes this stand out for visitors is the conversation across time. One artist is working now. The other worked in the early 20th century. In the same rooms, you can look from one to the other and back again.
