Dowson: Saints better prepared for Prem title defence this time

Northampton Saints are better equipped to defend their Prem Rugby title this time around, director of rugby Phil Dowson says.

Dowson, the man in charge of team strategy and selection at Franklin's Gardens, told BBC Radio Northampton's Saints Show that lessons have been learned from their last reign as champions.

Saints finished top of England's top flight in 2025-26 after winning 14 of 18 matches, then beat Exeter 26-17 at Allianz Stadium in June to lift the trophy, BBC Sport reported. It was their second title in three seasons. The first, in 2024, was followed by a slump to eighth the next year.

That drop still stings. After the 2024 triumph, Saints lost a core of senior leaders in Courtney Lawes, Alex Waller, Lewis Ludlam and Alex Moon. The squad never quite recovered its balance.

This summer has brought change again. Full-back George Furbank, wing James Ramm, back-rower Sam Graham, prop Tom James and prop Elliot Millar Mills have all moved on. But Dowson believes the spine of the side is stronger.

Northampton have kept England internationals Tommy Freeman, Fin Smith, Fraser Dingwall and Alex Mitchell on new deals, while flanker Henry Pollock remains contracted for 2026-27 at least. Incoming are Italy tight-head prop Ion Neculai — the anchor on the front row of the scrum — and Italy wing Malik Faissal, a finisher out wide.

History shows how hard retention is. Saracens in 2019 were the last club to win back-to-back Premiership titles. No one has managed it since.

Saints start their defence at home to Newcastle Red Bulls, FloRugby reported. Keep the ball. Win the collisions. That is the simple maths of league and union alike.

What makes this stand out is the tone. No big predictions. Just a quiet confidence that this squad knows what a title defence costs.
