Wolfson History Prize names six-book 2026 shortlist spanning 3,000 years
Six books spanning 3,000 years of history are in the running for the 2026 Wolfson History Prize.
The shortlist, the final six books still in contention, was announced on 17 September. The prize is in its 54th year and is described as the United Kingdom's most valuable history writing prize, according to Publishing Perspectives.
The six titles are The Boundless Deep, Vanished, Summer of Fire and Blood, Liverpool, The Library of Ancient Wisdom and Silence of the Gods, as listed by the Wolfson History Prize.
Together they cover three millennia. The judges said the books shed light on how societies are brought together or driven apart after disruption.
The purse is large. The winner receives £50,000 in British pounds, while each of the five other shortlisted authors receives £5,000. The winner will be named on 1 December.
The judging panel is chaired by historian David Cannadine. He is joined by Sudhir Hazareesingh, Helen King, Diarmaid MacCulloch and Helen McCarthy.
To qualify, authors must have been resident in the United Kingdom in the year of the book's publication. They must not have won the prize before, and the book must be written to be accessible to a general reader.
Since 2017, the prize has named a shortlist of six before choosing one overall winner, according to the prize's archive of past winners.
What makes this stand out for casual readers is that accessibility rule. It means the shortlisted books are judged not only on research, but on whether someone with no specialist background can pick one up and follow it.
