Six novels remain in the running for the Booker Prize 2026.

The shortlist, meaning the final cut of six titles from which the winner is chosen, has been announced. It includes two previous winners, one previous shortlistee and three authors new to the prize, according to The Booker Prizes.

Marlon James has a novel on the shortlist. Douglas Stuart also has a novel on the shortlist, according to The New York Times. Both authors had already appeared on the longlist, the longer initial selection published in July, alongside Elizabeth Strout and Rebecca Perry, according to the BBC.

Two other shortlisted titles have been named as The End of Everything and The Disappearers. The full list comprises six novels in total, as set out in a guide published on 22 September by The Booker Prizes.

The 2026 judging panel, the group that reads the entries and picks the winner, includes Mary Beard, Raymond Antrobus, Jarvis Cocker and Rebecca Liu.

The 2026 cycle follows a contested history. In 2019, the prize was split between Bernardine Evaristo and Margaret Atwood after the judges refused to follow the rules requiring a single winner. Orbital won the prize in 2024, according to The Guardian. A Guardian books team member named Justine served on that 2024 judging panel.

A separate prize programme has also moved forward. The International Booker Prize 2026 shortlist has been announced. Its longer International longlist included The Nights Are Quiet in Tehran by Shida Bazyar and We Are Green and Trembling by Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, according to The Booker Prizes.

What makes this stand out for readers and bookshops is the balance. A six-book list with returning winners on one side and three prize newcomers on the other gives sellers, libraries and borrowers several different entry points. The judges now choose one winner from the six.
