Sharon Horgan Returns to HBO with London Comedy Youth

Sharon Horgan is back on HBO on 20 September with Youth, a London-set comedy she created and leads.

The series is scheduled to air at 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20 on HBO, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Horgan stars as Alex. She also created the series.

Alex is a 50something divorcee. She lives in a London flat and works as a literary agent.

Her teenage son Ruari, played by Aran Murphy, is about to head to university. Her boss and best friend Sam is played by Sharlene Whyte. The cast also includes Rupert Friend and Robbie Gee.

An old situationship named Patrick reappears in Alex's life. A situationship is a romantic connection without a defined commitment.

The premise has been in the works since February 2025. That is when HBO ordered a comedy following a 50-year-old divorcee's search for sex and love while caring for ailing parents and parenting, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Short and simple. A new chapter, squeezed between school runs and parent care.

The order came with a first-look deal, meaning HBO gets first refusal on Horgan's new ideas. Horgan is also an executive producer on Youth, meaning she oversees the show behind the camera as well as appearing in front of it, according to Variety. HBO released a trailer for the series in late August, Variety reported.

Youth was made as a British HBO original. It is set to come to HBO Max in the U.K., Variety has reported.

Speaking in July, Horgan said she had not ruled out working with Apple again in future, even as Youth moved forward at HBO.

For viewers, this means a familiar Sunday-night slot with a new address. No further run has been confirmed in the materials supplied. What is fixed is the date, the set-up and Horgan pulling double duty as creator and star.
