Bezzy, the Squeaky Data Centre Toy That Hums Back
Squeeze Bezzy and it hums back.
Bezzy is a handmade plush toy made to look like a data centre, the large buildings packed with computers that store information and run AI and online services. It was created by New York creative agency Basura together with musician Big Data, Dezeen reported.
The toy takes the form of a server rack, a tall cabinet that holds rows of computer servers inside data centres, as described by Ad Age. It has a soft grey body with a stitched smile and wide eyes. Long arms and legs dangle from its sides, giving the hardware a friendly, floppy shape. It looks cuddly. It sounds industrial.
Squeeze its belly and Bezzy plays a low, steady hum. That audio was recorded beside a real data centre in Virginia, in the United States. The recording was made by a woman who lives next to the facility. A small tag stitched to the toy reads, "Hug me for ear piercing forever hum".
Bezzy is part of Adopt a Data Centre, a satirical campaign about the impact of data centres and AI. Satire here means jokes with a serious edge. The campaign presents giant AI buildings as if they were rescue animals looking for "forever homes", the phrase animal shelters use when asking people to adopt a pet. Alongside the toy, the project includes a website, stickers and posters.
Basura founder Rajeev Basu said the team interviewed dozens of people who live near data centres while developing the project. Those conversations helped shape the adoption idea and the decision to put a real neighbourhood recording inside the toy. The hum is not invented. It is what one neighbour hears.
Only 20 Bezzys were made by hand. They were created around the release of Big Data's EP 4.0, an extended play record, which is shorter than a full album but longer than a single. The release is described as Big Data's first album in more than seven years. For fans, this means Bezzy is a rare collectible tied to new music, not a toy on general sale. No wider shop release was announced.
