Moderna Museet in Stockholm appoints Cédric Fauq as contemporary curator

Stockholm's Moderna Museet has appointed Cédric Fauq as Curator of Contemporary International Art. ARTnews reported the appointment on 18 September 2026, a day after the museum posted its Swedish notice.

He will assume the post on 1 December 2026. The date is given in the museum's English press material. Moderna Museet lists that formal start date. It gives both sides time to finish current work.

Fauq was born in France in 1992, the Swedish notice states. He holds a master's degree in Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Art in London. That is a postgraduate qualification. In plain terms, it trains people to research artists, care for collections and build exhibitions.

A curator does that building work. The job is part research, part organisation and part public presentation. At Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Sweden, the title covers art made internationally in recent years and now. The new hire will work with living artists and recent acquisitions.

He joins from the Capc Musée d'Art Contemporain in Bordeaux, France. There he is Chief Curator / Head of Programme and Collections, as listed by CCCB. The double title matters. Chief curator leads the artistic choices, while head of programme and collections looks after the schedule and the works the museum holds.

In Bordeaux, Fauq has curated a run of exhibition projects. Capc's archive lists Barbe à Papa among them. It also lists The Moonfish Club. Both are presented as Capc Bordeaux exhibitions with Fauq as curator.

Two other Bordeaux projects carry full public dates. Systemic Love was presented from 7 April 2023 to 5 January 2025, according to Capc's press file. Antefuture was presented on the same dates, from 7 April 2023 to 5 January 2025, according to its own press file. Long runs like that are common for collection displays, which stay up while shorter shows turn over.

What makes this stand out is simple. A curator for contemporary international art helps decide what enters a public collection and how it is shown. Loans, new commissions and displays all pass across that desk. For visitors, the effect arrives slowly, then all at once in the galleries.

Fauq starts in December. His Stockholm work begins after that.
