Hampshire relegated as Domingo calls for club reset

Hampshire will play second-tier county cricket next summer for the first time in more than a decade, and head coach Russell Domingo says the whole club needs a "reset".

Relegation from Division One of the County Championship, England's main first-class competition played over up to four days with a red ball, was confirmed by a five-wicket defeat to Leicestershire. That scoreline means Leicestershire chased their target with five of their ten wickets still intact. The decisive game was played at Grace Road in Leicester Daily Echo.

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent after the defeat, Domingo said the reset had to go beyond results on the field BBC Sport. Hampshire will now play in Division Two for the first time since winning promotion in 2014. The drop ends a long stay among the top ten counties.

Domingo arrived on a two-year deal in December to replace Adi Birrell. He inherited a side that had avoided the drop in 2025 by a single point. Ben Brown had been appointed red-ball captain, the leader for the long format, ahead of that 2025 season.

This year brought little stability. Pace bowler John Turner was forced to retire at 25. Australia's Michael Neser was signed for the opening six Championship matches but was withdrawn in March by Cricket Australia. Hampshire then reversed the signing of New Zealand all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn for the final four Championship matches in September after feedback from staff and supporters.

There was contrast in the short format. Hampshire Hawks reached the final of the T20 Blast, the 20-over competition built for fast scoring and evening crowds, before losing to Northamptonshire.

For fans, this means a very different calendar next year. Division Two has eight counties, compared with ten in Division One, and offers a route straight back up for its strongest teams.

Domingo has been here before at international level, having previously served as head coach of South Africa and Bangladesh. His task now is to steady Hampshire and shape a squad ready to win in the second tier.
