Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen Play the Ramseys in Netflix Drama Due Dec. 10

Melissa McCarthy will play Patsy Ramsey opposite Clive Owen as John Ramsey in The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey, a limited series — meaning a one-season drama with a planned ending — set to premiere on Netflix on Dec. 10. Variety

McCarthy, an Academy Award nominee, also serves as an executive producer on the project, according to Netflix Tudum. Owen is also an Academy Award nominee. The series comes from showrunner Richard LaGravenese, the writer and director overseeing the creative direction of the season.

The drama centres on a real case. JonBenét Ramsey was 6 years old when she was killed in the family home in Boulder, Colorado, on Christmas night in 1996. The murder remains unsolved. Her mother, Patsy Ramsey, died of ovarian cancer in 2006.

McCarthy discussed the role for the first time in a feature interview tied to her cover appearance on Variety’s “Power of Women” issue. She said the production was made without the involvement of the Ramsey family.

The project has changed homes. McCarthy and Owen were first announced to lead a limited series about the case for Paramount+ in September 2024, according to Variety. That version did not go forward there. The story later moved to Netflix as a scripted limited series.

Netflix has covered the case before in unscripted form. Its three-part docuseries Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey examined the investigation, according to Variety. The new project is separate. It is a dramatised account, not a documentary.

For viewers, this means two different ways to watch the same history on one platform. The docuseries lays out the inquiry. The December drama retells it through the parents at its centre.
