Harry Brook says Brydon Carse needs time away from England
England white-ball captain Harry Brook says Brydon Carse needs time away from international cricket.
Brook, who leads England in one-day internationals and T20 internationals, spoke ahead of the first one-day international against Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday. In a one-day international, each side has 50 overs to bat. Brook told BBC Sport he is very good mates with Carse and has spoken to him a lot.
He said Carse just needs time away from the international scene. He said the fast bowler is working on things behind the scenes. He hopes Carse will be ready again at some point in the future.
Carse has not played for England since a night out in Derby in August. He was arrested then de-arrested during that night out. Footage appearing to show him being led away in handcuffs circulated within a day, as reported by Sky Sports. England removed him from the squad for the second Test against Pakistan while the matter was looked into, according to Reuters.
Test captain Joe Root said at the time he was “hacked off” and disappointed that the incident had overshadowed a team win. Carse was then left out of the squad for the third and final Test against Pakistan at Edgbaston. Derbyshire Police confirmed on Friday that its investigation into an alleged assault had ended with no further action taken, BBC Sport reported.
The cricket process is not over. Carse still faces an investigation by the Cricket Regulator, the body that handles discipline in the professional game. The England and Wales Cricket Board said he will take time to work through the issues that led to the Derby incident. White-ball head coach Brendon McCullum said Carse needs to get his house in order before playing for England again.
Carse remains available for selection but has not been picked in any format since August. Brook said there will eventually be a debate over a recall. He pointed out that Carse has been bowling extremely well for Durham, his county team. Carse claimed a five-wicket haul for Durham earlier in September while his England career was on hold.
For fans, this means waiting. England are not closing the door. They are saying good bowling alone is not enough right now.
