Taylor Swift to receive first VMA Artist Director Honor on 27 September

Taylor Swift will receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors at the 2026 Video Music Awards on 27 September, Rolling Stone reported.

The ceremony will be hosted by Snoop Dogg. It will air live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on CBS, MTV and Paramount+ at 7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT, according to MTV listings.

The new prize recognises a sustained body of work from artists who have pushed creative boundaries and developed a clear directorial voice. Swift is its first recipient.

Her record in the directing category is long. She has been nominated for Best Direction, the VMA prize for the credited director of a music video, eight times. She has won four times: for “The Man,” “All Too Well: The Short Film,” “Anti-Hero” and “Fortnight.”

That total is the most wins in the category. Swift has four. Director David Fincher has three.

Swift could extend that lead this year. She has nine nominations at the 2026 VMAs, including Artist of the Year. Her video for “Opalite” is nominated for Best Direction.

Her video for “The Fate of Ophelia” is nominated for Video of the Year and Best Pop. The song is from her album Life of a Showgirl.

The wider night is taking shape. Madonna leads the nominations field with 11 nods, ABC News reported. Madonna, Lisa, Raye and Shaboozey are among the confirmed performers. Nirvana will receive the Video Vanguard award.

MTV has opened fan voting for favourite nominees ahead of the broadcast, MTV said.

What makes this stand out is the job title. Swift is honoured here as a director, not only as a performer. Voters will then decide within days whether “Opalite” adds a fifth Best Direction win.
