Mikel Arteta is staying at Arsenal. The Premier League champions have agreed an improved new contract with their manager, whose current deal expires at the end of this season, BBC Sport reported on 22 September 2026.

It is a reward for patience and for silverware. Arteta joined Arsenal in December 2019. His new terms are set to take him into at least his tenth year at the club.

The money reflects that standing. Arteta currently earns £10m per year plus £5m in bonuses. His new deal includes a sharp pay increase.

The agreement did not come from nowhere. In May 2026, Arsenal's owners said sorting a new contract for Arteta was their utmost priority, according to Reuters. A month earlier, Arteta had played down talk of an extension but stressed he remained fully committed to the club.

There is history here too. Arteta last extended his deal in September 2024, when British media reported terms running to 2027. At the time he spoke about his enjoyment of working with ambitious people every day and thanked supporters for their backing.

For fans, this means clarity. No long goodbye. No contract countdown hanging over every press conference. Just a title-winning manager, secured, with a full season still to play.

What makes this stand out is the timescale. Ten years is rare for any manager in England's top flight, where jobs can turn in a single bad month. Arsenal have chosen continuity, and Arteta has chosen to stay and build on a championship.
