AMC+ Picks Up Smilla's Sense of Snow for U.S. and Canada

AMC+ has picked up Smilla's Sense of Snow for the U.S. and Canada, giving Peter Høeg's bestselling novel a new television home in North America.
The drama will stream on AMC+, the subscription streaming service from AMC Networks, in both countries. No exact launch date has been set. It was expected to arrive in fall 2026, according to Deadline.
Danish actress Filippa Coster-Waldau leads the cast as Smilla Jaspersen, a role confirmed in an ITV announcement. She stars alongside Elyas M'Barek and Henry Lloyd-Hughes. BAFTA winner Amma Asante, whose directing credits include The Handmaid's Tale, directs the series.
The story moves Høeg's book into the future. It is set in Copenhagen in 2040. Smilla lives under a near-future surveillance state, meaning a government that watches its citizens closely, as the city faces a looming energy crisis.
Asante developed the adaptation with writer Clive Bradley. The novel has been filmed before. The 1997 film version starred Julia Ormond and was directed by Bille August.
The new series was produced by Germany-based Constantin Film with Viaplay, ARD Degeto Film and Baltic Film Services. It received backing from the European Union and film funds in Germany, Finland and Lithuania. ITV Studios is handling international distribution and struck the AMC+ deal.
The wider cast includes Amanda Collin, Morten Suurballe, Silver Wolfe, Set Sjöstrand and Alexandre Willaume.
For viewers in the U.S. and Canada, this means the clearest route yet to see the show. The deal covers those two territories, with rollout plans elsewhere handled separately through ITV Studios.
