Jessica Lange will play five characters in American Horror Story Season 13. Four are famous returns. One is a complete secret.

Speaking on Good Morning America on Tuesday, 22 September, Lange said her comeback means reviving four past roles plus one mystery part she would not spoil, according to Variety. The returning four are Constance Langdon from Season 1, subtitled Murder House, Sister Jude Martin from Season 2, Asylum, Fiona Goode from Season 3, Coven, and Elsa Mars from Season 4, Freak Show.

Lange said Constance was creator Ryan Murphy's favourite character from the start. She said Constance appears pretty much throughout the new season. Elsa, the German cabaret singer turned circus owner from Freak Show, was the one she really loved playing.

Then there is the fifth. Lange would not name the character. She said she would be curious if anybody can figure it out before the episodes air.

She also let slip that one of her characters gets a musical number. She joked it will not win her a Grammy to complete an EGOT, the sweep of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. The implication is that this singer is not a very good one.

Season 13 premieres on Thursday, 24 September, on FX. An earlier listing put the launch on FX and Hulu on the same date, according to ABC7.

The season is built as a large ensemble and a reunion. Alongside Lange, the cast includes Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates and Emma Roberts, plus pop star Ariana Grande, according to Good Morning America. Billie Lourd will also appear, and Paul Anthony Kelly has been announced as a newest cast member. John Waters has teased a role.

What makes this stand out is the U-turn. Lange left the anthology series, in which each season tells a separate horror story with many of the same actors, in 2015, saying: "There's always an end to everything." Earlier in 2025 she said she would not return. Now she is back with the heaviest workload of anyone in the season.

For fans, this means a short wait and a guessing game. Four witches, neighbours and survivors are confirmed. The fifth face is still hidden.
