WoW: Forever Wants Players to Misremember Azeroth

Blizzard wants you to misremember Azeroth.
World of Warcraft: Forever, announced during BlizzCon 2026, adds four new zones built to blend straight into the 20-year-old map. It is set to launch on November 4 with more than 1,000 new quests, according to GameSpot.
The zones are the Riverglades, Mount Hjyal, Shen'dralas and Zephras Isle. Senior art director Jeff Parrott and senior game designer Josh Greenfield say the brief was to make them feel "familiar, but new".
Parrott said Blizzard would be "in a good spot" if players look around and ask: "Did this exist in the game?" Greenfield gave that idea a name. He called it a "temporary Mandela Effect", the moment where a player thinks "I'm pretty sure this was there", meaning a false memory that feels true.
That ties into what Greenfield described as a core pillar for the expansion: "world as the main character". In practice, that means the land itself drives the story rather than only a central villain or threat.
Blizzard has outlined a job for players in three of the four areas. In Forever, players help restore Hyjal, uncover forgotten history in Shen'dralas, and build a future on the Riverglades frontier, according to Blizzard.
The two developers discussed systems at length in a BlizzCon 2026 interview with MMORPG.com. That conversation covered campsites and horizontal progression, which is progression that widens player options without simply raising the level cap, according to MMORPG.com.
A separate panel recap adds detail on gear. New effects in Forever will tie item choices to specific environments, such as Woodlands, Mountains or Deserts, and to specific creature types.
What makes this stand out is restraint. Instead of a sharper break from the past, Blizzard is asking players to feel at home in places they have never visited.
