Christian Eriksen has left VfL Wolfsburg by mutual consent to return to Denmark.

The German club announced the decision on Wednesday, 23 September 2026. The midfielder’s contract had been due to run until June 2027, according to The Guardian.

Eriksen, 34, joined Wolfsburg as a free agent a year ago. He made 34 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing 10 assists.

The parting allows him to be closer to his family in Denmark, where he will continue his recovery. Wolfsburg are now in the 2. Bundesliga, Germany’s second tier, after relegation from the top flight during his season at the club, as reported by France 24.

His last game for the club came in May. That was the defeat to Paderborn in the promotion-relegation play-off, a two-legged tie that decides which club plays in the Bundesliga.

The exit comes three months after Eriksen collapsed while playing for Denmark in a friendly against Ukraine in June 2026. It was the second time he had collapsed on the pitch.

The first was in 2021. He suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening European Championship group match against Finland in Copenhagen. He was then fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, known as an ICD, a small device that monitors the heart rhythm and delivers a shock if it detects a dangerous pattern.

Eriksen said in June that the device did what it was designed to do after his second collapse. In July, he said he would return to Denmark to undergo a rehabilitation programme.

Wolfsburg’s managing director of sport, Dieter Hecking, said the club had granted Eriksen’s request to cancel the agreement.

What makes this stand out is the affection Eriksen commands well beyond Denmark. Strangers in different cities have held their breath for him twice now, and his calm return to football after 2021 gave a lot of people a memory they still talk about. For now, football waits.
