Mason Thames will headline Narcs, a coming-of-age comedy set up at Sony Pictures. The actor has closed a deal to star, Deadline reported on 23 September 2026.

Plot details are being kept under wraps. Sony has given no word yet on character or story, according to the same Deadline report.

The film will be the directorial debut of John Phillips. Phillips is best known as a writer, with credits including No Hard Feelings, Good Boys and Dirty Grandpa, Deadline noted.

The starting script comes from Jordan Shipley and Justin Shipley. The pair created Wrecked, the survival comedy that ran on the US cable channel TBS. A later rewrite comes from Phillips and Gene Stupnitsky, Deadline reported.

Stupnitsky will produce through his Big Name Entertainment banner. He will be joined by Robert Lamonaca and Phillips as executive producers, senior credits that usually cover creative oversight and financing, Deadline said.

Thames arrives with a clear screen track record. He starred in Universal’s horror film The Black Phone in 2021 and fronted the studio’s live-action How to Train Your Dragon in 2025, Deadline noted. A sequel, The Black Phone 2, followed in 2025.

More is already on his slate. A second live-action Dragon film is due for release on 11 June 2027. Thames will also appear in Caine, the John Wick spin-off directed by Donnie Yen, Deadline reported.

For fans, this means a change of pace. Thames has built his name in horror and big fantasy adventure. Narcs puts him at the centre of a youth comedy led by writers with strong form in that space.
