Meta is launching Meta VR Glasses, an immersive headset for movies, games and work that rests on the ears like a conventional pair of glasses.

The announcement came at Meta Connect 2026, held Sept. 23-24. The Verge

A lighter design with a separate computer

The design differs from the Quest line. The Glasses weigh 100g, compared with 515g for the Quest 3. Meta left only the display and sensors on the face and moved processing to a separate wired compute puck, a small external computer connected by cable. That separation lets the head-worn part shrink to glasses size.

The puck holds the power and heat load. It contains a Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, 128GB of storage, 12GB of RAM, and the battery. Meta says the battery provides up to three hours of media playback. The Glasses can stay in use while the puck charges, so the user stays connected to wall power instead of stopping to recharge. Display and hand-and-eye control

On the face is what Meta calls a 5K MicroOLED Infinite Display, rated at 2412 x 2288 pixels per eye, 37 pixels per degree (PPD), and up to 120Hz refresh rate. PPD is a measure of sharpness and how visible the pixel structure is at normal viewing distance, while refresh rate sets how smooth motion looks. Two front cameras supply color passthrough, a live video view of the surroundings that lets users stay aware without removing the device.

Control uses eyes and hands only. Two pairs of eye-tracking cameras detect what the user is looking at to highlight it. Six external cameras track the hands for gesture control. No handheld controller is in the loop, and no neural wristband is needed. That means fewer accessories to carry and pair, while continuous work shifts to camera-based tracking, lighting and calibration to keep gaze accuracy steady.

Fit, films and how it compares to Ray-Ban Meta

Fit comes in small and large widths at the same cost. For content, Meta built a VR Enhanced Cinema version of Avengers: Endgame with Disney and Industrial Light & Magic for long-form video, alongside games and work.

Meta holds its Connect event at its headquarters in Menlo Park, California, U.S., where updated smart glasses have been shown before. Ray-Ban Meta glasses are AI-powered smart glasses, a separate line from fully immersive VR. Reuters

Product listings for Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) describe up to 8 hours of battery life, with up to 48 additional hours from a fully charged charging case, about 3 hours 20 minutes of continuous audio playback, and 32GB of storage for more than 100 30-second videos. Those numbers apply to lightweight glasses with audio and a camera, not to an immersive MicroOLED headset with a separate compute puck rated at three hours of media playback.

In my view, the architecture is more important than any single specification. Separating the display from the computer reflects the limits of heat, weight balance and battery chemistry inside a glasses frame. Passthrough plus gaze selection plus hand gestures also lowers the setup cost for work reviews, film screenings and casual games where controllers get in the way. If comfort lasts through a full-length film, the limit moves to content supply and the delay in tracking response, which opens more useful work.
