Meta's $1,300 VR Glasses Bring 3D Films and Live Sport in 2027

Meta will sell a new pair of VR glasses for $1,300 in spring 2027, designed to play films, TV and live sport on theatre-sized virtual screens.
The company laid out the content plan on 24 September, pitching the device as an all-in-one unit for media, games and work Deadline.
The hardware is built in two parts. Lightweight frames handle the sensors and display, while a pocket-sized puck handles computing, battery and storage. The two are joined by an optical tether, a thin cable that carries data and power.
Meta says the glasses are five times lighter than its Meta Quest 3 headset. Viewers control them with hand gestures or by moving their eyes to icons on screen. The company says they can be worn comfortably for a full film, or to work privately on a long flight while staying aware of the surroundings.
The viewing line-up covers subscription streaming, free streaming and live sport. The glasses will provide access to Prime Video, YouTube, Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+.
They will also carry DIRECTV, AMC+, Crunchyroll, Plex, Tubi, NBA, MLB, ESPN, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC, some with virtual and 3D enhancements. Meta says its TV app for the device will offer 3D catalogues from Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+.
A Disney+ partnership will arrive first on current headsets. Subscribers will be able to stream films including The Avengers and Black Panther in 3D on Meta Quest headsets before the glasses launch. That partnership includes themed viewing rooms, meaning computer-generated surroundings for watching, such as Tatooine and Avengers Tower.
Meta plans hundreds of films to rent or buy on Quest later in 2026, expanding to thousands of titles by the glasses launch in spring 2027. Future 3D films are set to include titles from Lionsgate and blockbusters from James Cameron and Lightstorm Vision that have not been released in 3D before.
Sport gets its own push. ESPN will offer Immersive Sports on the device, billed as a front-row seat with 8K streaming, an ultra-sharp picture format, and 180-degree views that surround the viewer. It will launch with college football in 2026 on Quest, with more sports to follow in 2027.
At launch, Meta says the glasses will carry more than 100 immersive live sports events a year from MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC.
For work and travel, the device supports multi-panel virtual displays, meaning several floating screens at once, with built-in surface input that can turn any table or desk into a keyboard. Meta describes the package as a personal cinema, a courtside seat, a multi-screen workspace and a games console in one device that fits in a bag. It also includes built-in AI, which the company calls its "most advanced device yet" ANI News.
The glasses were shown as part of Meta Connect 2026. Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg wore the device on 23 September at Meta headquarters in Menlo Park, California, while presenting a new line of smart glasses.
For viewers, this means the contest is about where the apps live. If the launch date holds, a single headset would gather rival streamers, rental films and live games inside one virtual room next spring.
