Norwest Shooting: 11-Year-Old Dies, Police Investigation Continues

An 11-year-old boy shot in the face and neck inside a unit in Norwest died in hospital at about 8pm on Thursday, 24 September, after three days in critical condition. The Guardian
He had been found with the wound on Monday afternoon. Police were called to a unit in Fairway Drive, Norwest, at about 5pm on Monday after reports of a shooting. NSW Ambulance paramedics treated him at the scene. He was taken to Westmead children's hospital in critical condition and stayed there until Thursday.
Five other people were in the home at the time. None was injured. Norwest is in Sydney's Hills District. 1News
Three men, all aged 18, were arrested in connection with the incident. Two were taken to The Hills police station and later released pending further inquiries, meaning they were let go but the inquiry continues. The third was taken to Riverstone police station and charged with concealing a serious indictable offence, meaning an accusation of hiding information about a serious crime rather than firing the shot.
Police set out these steps in two media releases, titled 'Man charged after boy injured in alleged shooting - Norwest' and the earlier 'Boy injured after shooting inside home - Norwest'. The public record so far describes the sequence, the location, the medical response and the custody outcomes. It does not describe how the firearm entered the unit, who fired it, or the relationships among the six people inside and the three men arrested.
The broader context here is the move from an injury investigation to a death investigation. A critical injury on Monday is now a fatal shooting. That change frames every next decision about the weapon, the shooting itself and what was done afterward.
In my view, the custody picture deserves close attention. Two young adults were released without charge for now. One faces a concealment allegation. On the facts disclosed, the central act has not been publicly attributed.
Looking at what this means for the next phase, police have signalled the case is not closed. Forensic work, interviews with the five uninjured people present, and review of the period between the shooting and the arrival of officers will likely decide if further charges follow or the existing charge changes, while leaving open where the gun was before Monday, how it discharged in a home with six occupants, and what each person did right after.
