Kent press promotion bid after bowling out Gloucestershire for 229

Kent tightened their hold on promotion with a commanding opening day against Gloucestershire at Canterbury.
They bowled the visitors out for 229 after choosing to bowl first, then closed on 71-1. That left them 158 behind with nine wickets in hand in this Rothesay County Championship Division Two finale, played from 24 to 27 September at the St Lawrence Ground.
Matt Milnes led the attack with 4 for 55, as reported by BBC Sport. Kent struck early. They never let the scoring rate settle.
James Bracey held the innings together with 86. Ollie Price supported him with 52. The pair provided the backbone of Gloucestershire's total of 229 in 69.5 overs, according to Gloucestershire's match centre.
Kent lost Zak Crawley for 1, bowled by JT Langridge. Ben Compton steadied the reply with 33 not out. Sam Northeast was alongside him on 27 not out at stumps.
There was a warm moment before play for Grant Stewart. He was presented with his Kent county cap, becoming the 224th player to receive the honour.
The stakes are plain. The County Championship is England's four-day domestic competition, played in two divisions. Promotion lifts the leading Division Two sides into Division One for the following season.
Kent came into the final round in second place and needing 20 points to guarantee going up. They had been locked in a battle for promotion with two rounds left, when they sat on 173 points, according to ECB. Gloucestershire, by contrast, had 82 points at that stage.
For fans, this was the ideal start. A low first-innings total keeps the arithmetic simple. Three days remain, and Kent have already banked the early momentum.
