Madonna to Open 2026 VMAs as Snoop Dogg Hosts in Los Angeles

Madonna will open the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Sept. 27 in Los Angeles, her first performance on the show in 23 years.

Snoop Dogg will host the ceremony, which airs live from Los Angeles, according to the full performers and presenters list published by Billboard. The show runs 7:30-9:30 p.m. ET / 4:30-6:30 p.m. PT on CBS in the United States, simulcast on MTV and streaming on Paramount+ Premium.

The opening slot gives Madonna a new VMAs record. It will be her fifth time opening the show, the most openings for any artist.

Two tribute performances are planned. Kacey Musgraves will perform a tribute to Dolly Parton, while RAYE, SOMBR and Teddy Swims will perform together in a tribute honouring George Michael.

Nirvana will receive the Video Vanguard Award, the show's lifetime prize for achievement in music videos. The award has long been used to recognise artists with a lasting body of video work.

Taylor Swift will receive the inaugural VMA Artist Director honor. Her new music video, for the single "Patient Zero", is set to premiere during the broadcast.

RAYE will also have a solo performance spot in addition to the George Michael tribute. Sienna Spiro will have a solo performance spot as well.

Shaboozey will make his VMAs performance debut. He will perform his solo song "Cowgirl" and then join Gunna for "High Noon", according to Billboard. Short sets. Big stage.

The lineup also includes LISA, who will perform her song "SaWaDiKa", and Gener8ion and Yung Lean, who will perform "Storm II" together.

Five presenters have been confirmed so far. Alex Warren, Charli xcx, Teyana Taylor, Tyla and Troye Sivan will all present awards during the night.

For viewers, this means a tight two-hour broadcast built around openings, premieres and shared stages. Madonna opens, Swift premieres, and the night closes with its annual mix of current hits and catalogue tributes.
