Madonna opened the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, her first VMAs set since 2003.

Snoop Dogg is hosting this year's ceremony. Madonna also leads the nominations race, with 13 nominations, according to Billboard.

Taylor Swift follows with 11 nominations. Sabrina Carpenter has nine and Ariana Grande has eight.

The night includes a lifetime honour. Nirvana will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, the prize given for a lasting contribution to music video. Surviving members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear are expected to appear, according to Pitchfork.

Two tribute performances are on the bill. Kacey Musgraves will perform a tribute to Dolly Parton. RAYE, Sombr and Teddy Swims will perform together in tribute to George Michael.

LISA will perform "Sawadika". Shaboozey has two slots in the show, a solo performance of "Cowgirl" and a joint performance of "High Noon" with Gunna.

Yung Lean will perform with GENER8ION, with the pair set to play "Storm" live. Sienna Spiro will also perform. Spiro is nominated as well.

She is one of seven Best New Artist nominees. The others are Bella Kay, CORTIS, Magnus Ferrell, Malcolm Todd, Myles Smith and Stella Lefty.

The VMAs are produced by Gunpowder & Sky, with Van Toffler serving as a producer.

What makes this stand out is the mix of generations on one stage. An opener from Madonna, a Vanguard moment for Nirvana and new-artist nominees performing in the same night puts four decades of video history in a single broadcast.
