Hillman Reopens: A Different World Sequel Arrives on Netflix

Hillman College reopens on Sept. 24, 2026, as Netflix releases a 10-episode A Different World sequel exactly 39 years after the original premiered on NBC on Sept. 24, 1987. The Hollywood Reporter That date is no accident. The new series puts a new freshman at the centre of the same fictional historically Black college.
The original A Different World was a spin-off of The Cosby Show and aired on NBC from 1987 to 1993. The Hollywood Reporter It centred on students at an HBCU, meaning a historically Black college or university. The sequel follows Deborah Wayne, the daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she starts at Hillman with her own group of friends.
Netflix describes the story as following a freshman and her crew juggling school, romantic drama and family legacy at a historically Black college. Netflix It is made as a single-camera dramedy, meaning it is shot like a film without a live studio audience and mixes comedy and drama. Los Angeles Times
Maleah Joi Moon plays Deborah Wayne. Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy reprise their roles as Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, her parents. Darryl M. Bell returns as Ron Johnson, now the father of a student named Shaquille, and Cree Summer returns as Freddie Brooks, now a professor at Hillman.
Season one also brings back familiar faces for cameos. Jada Pinkett Smith, Glynn Turman, Joe Morton, Jenifer Lewis, Karen Malina White, Ajai Sanders and Charnele Brown all appear.
The sequel was created by Felicia Pride, who serves as showrunner, the person who leads the writers and guides the creative day to day, and as executive producer, a senior role that oversees the production. Executive producers also include Debbie Allen, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood. Allen directed the premiere episode.
Pride's earlier writing credits include Grey's Anatomy, Queen Sugar and Bel-Air. She told The Hollywood Reporter that Allen called her to lead the new series while she was writing on Bel-Air. Her first reaction was hesitancy about whether she could pull it off.
Speaking during a March set visit at the Atlanta University Center Consortium, Pride was frank about the workload. "If I knew how hard it was going to be, I would not have done it," she said. She said the sequel aims for hope, heart, warmth and an intergenerational element linking past and present students.
The project was first reported in development at Netflix in August 2024, when Deadline said it would revolve around Dwayne and Whitley's daughter. Deadline Pride has said it is an honour to help bring back a show she grew up on that had a profound impact on her life.
For viewers coming fresh to Hillman, this means no homework is needed. Old ties bring returning characters back to campus. New ties give Deborah and her classmates their own stories to finish.
