A Different World Sequel Now Streaming on Netflix

Hillman College is back in session. Netflix’s sequel to A Different World is now streaming, with Debbie Allen returning as executive producer and director, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The new story centres on Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon. Deborah is the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, the couple at the heart of the original series. She arrives at the fictional Hillman College to find it changed and familiar at the same time.
Two favourite faces are waiting for her. Kadeem Hardison is back as Dwayne Wayne, now serving as Hillman’s interim president. Jasmine Guy returns as Whitley Gilbert, now a board member. Allen also appears again in her iconic role and directs the premiere episode, Netflix Tudum reports.
The series is led by Felicia Pride, with Allen as executive producer, meaning she oversees the creative direction and day-to-day decisions. It is a full-circle moment for Allen. She was showrunner, meaning the lead writer-producer in charge, as well as producer and director on the original A Different World for its second through sixth seasons.
The numbers tell that history. Allen produced 122 episodes of the original run and directed 83 episodes. Her connection to Hillman goes back decades. She said in 2012 that she would like to do a reboot, in a message posted on Twitter, now X.
Allen’s own television story started early. She earned her first TV acting credit on Good Times in 1976. She later won a Golden Globe Award for best actress for playing Lydia Grant on Fame, which ran from 1982 to 1987.
She also brought real public life onto the Hillman campus. Allen said she called Jesse Jackson and persuaded him to appear in an episode when Jackson was a viable presidential candidate. She said she also invited George Bush to do an episode, but he did not respond.
Netflix released a trailer ahead of launch, and the new cast appeared on TODAY on 23 September to talk about carrying the legacy of the hit show, according to TODAY.
What makes this stand out for viewers is the handover. A new student walks in. Her parents run the place. And the woman who once shaped their stories is now shaping hers.
