Amazon MGM Studios has optioned Hang the Decorators, a dark comedy feature now in development with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter attached to produce, as reported by Deadline on 24 September 2026.

The title refers to real people. The script is by Mike Makowsky and is based on the true story of interior designers Alexander Blarek and Frank Pellecchia, according to the same report. A dark comedy, in plain terms, is a story that finds humour in serious or unsettling subjects without losing sight of the human cost.

Interior design, for anyone new to the trade, covers the look, layout and furnishing of indoor spaces, from homes to shops and offices. True stories of working life are often reshaped for film, with events tightened and characters clarified so the story plays on screen.

Producing is about stewardship. Berlanti and Schechter will produce through their Berlanti/Schechter Films company, alongside Makowsky and Yan Fisher, who are producing for Invisible String Films, Deadline reported. A producer typically guides a project from early pages to the screen, helping to choose the team and keep the work on track.

The chain started inside the company. Michael McGrath, an executive vice-president, a senior executive, at Berlanti/Schechter, brought the project to the banner, according to the report. That is how many films begin, with one person championing a script or a story and taking it to producers who can build support around it.

To option material means something specific. The studio has taken an exclusive right for a period to develop the story for film. It has not yet ordered the film into production. Amazon MGM Studios acts here as the studio home, the organisation that holds that right while the creative team does the development work.

Development is the workshop phase. Scripts are revised. Budgets are tested. Possible directors and actors are discussed behind closed doors before any public announcement.

It is early days. There is no announced cast. There is no announced director. There is no release date.

For viewers, this means patience. A project in development may move quickly to filming, or it may sit, change shape or fall away. If Hang the Decorators advances, the next public steps would normally be a director and cast, followed by a decision to greenlight, which is the formal order to make the film.
