Joe Jonas slipped between a yacht and a tender boat while on holiday in Portofino, Italy, and has called the moment terrifying.

The singer told the story on the 23 September episode of The Morgan Stewart Show, saying a sudden wave moved the smaller boat just as he stepped across, according to Billboard.

Jonas was travelling with girlfriend Tatiana Gabriela, host Morgan Stewart and musician Jordan McGraw. The group had hired a yacht complete with crew and chef. They had stopped near a waterfront restaurant that asked visitors to transfer to its own tender boat, a small boat used to ferry people to shore, for the final approach.

The transfer went wrong in seconds. Jonas said the tender shifted away from the yacht as he moved, leaving him with no footing. He fell into the water between the two vessels. The first mate who was guiding him across also went in while trying to grab him.

He was fully dressed. His phone was in his pocket. On his first try to pull himself onto the tender, Jonas said he hit his shin and slipped back into the sea before getting out on the second attempt. He was left trapped in the water between the boats during the fall, according to People.

The shock arrived later. Jonas said it took about an hour, once the group was seated at the restaurant, before he fully realised how dangerous the incident could have been. He described it as the best outcome of a bad situation, according to Yahoo.

His first thought after getting out was family. Jonas said he wanted to call his children right away and see their faces. He shares daughters Willa, 6, and Delphine, 4, with ex-wife Sophie Turner.
