Bungie will move Marathon away from its extraction roots over the coming months.

The studio wants more approachable ways to play, with different levels of intensity and commitment. The existing extraction mode will stay. Bungie said it aims to keep that thrill while giving more players a way into the world, according to details set out on its website Bungie.

Extraction is the high-risk loop at the centre of the game. Players drop into a map, collect loot and try to get out alive. Fail, and they lose what they carried in.

October brings the Nightfall refresh. It includes a regular rewards pass and a free, permanent NuCaloric pass. Recurring sponsored kit queues will offer matchmaking with free gear, so players do not risk their own equipment. Access windows for the Cryo Archive, the game's end-game area, will also get larger.

December puts the focus on Symbiosis. That is the player-versus-environment mode, where players face computer-controlled enemies rather than each other. Bungie presents it as a lower-pressure way to play. An experimental Team Deathmatch mode will arrive at the same time for players who do not want core extraction play at all. That is straight team-against-team combat, with no loot to lose.

The December update also adds new places and tools to use. There is a new shell, a reworked Perimeter map with new zones, a new player-versus-environment pinnacle encounter and a fungal visual theme.

In March, Bungie plans a linked system of permanent player-versus-environment, player-versus-player and player-versus-environment-versus-player experiences. The last of those mixes computer enemies and rival players in the same match. The March plan also includes a new onboarding experience for new players, a more focused questline and narrative, a new zone and a new alien enemy.

The roadmap follows a soft start. Marathon has continued to see dwindling player numbers on PC, Eurogamer reported on 25 September 2026. Bungie had previously planned its next major update to launch on 22 September, according to a post published on 14 September 2026.

Bungie also published an update titled "The Next Chapter for Bungie" on 17 September 2026. In it, the studio said it will share more details on its unvaulting efforts, work to bring back past content, in the coming months.

For players put off by losing hard-won gear, this means more doors in. Extraction remains. It will no longer be the only way to play.
