Sony has reportedly sent game developers an unusually large survey about its plan to stop making PlayStation games on disc.

The claim comes from YouTube tech-reporting channel Moore's Law is Dead. Host Tom described the questionnaire as "a bigger survey than they've sent almost ever before", as reported by Eurogamer on 25 September 2026.

According to that account, one question asked developers for feedback on ending discs and physical game sales. Physical games are discs bought in a shop or posted in a box, rather than downloads bought from an online store. The report said the survey also touched on how developers sell those boxed copies.

That is all single-sourced. There is no other evidence that the survey exists. Eurogamer said it had asked Sony if the claim was true, and Sony has not publicly confirmed it.

Separately, IGN reported in undated coverage that PlayStation was polling developers after the decision. It said the survey included a question about how developers sell physical games. IGN described the original decision to end disc production as having sparked backlash among some players.

The background is confirmed. Sony announced on 1 July 2026 that it will end production of discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles in January 2028, according to the PlayStation Blog. It said games already released, or releasing before January 2028 in disc format, will not be affected. Owners can keep playing them.

Sony's plan has been closely watched. Earlier in September, some coverage suggested disc output would fall to 10 percent. Sony clarified the figure meant output would drop by 10 percent in 2028, not to 10 percent. The mix-up came from a misreading of comments by an executive at Sony DADC, the part of the company that manufactures discs, as reported by Eurogamer on 5 September 2026.

For players who prefer discs, the short-term position is unchanged. Shops can still sell current titles. The stated end date applies to production for new releases from January 2028.

If a developer survey is confirmed, it would suggest Sony is testing opinion in the industry that makes those games. For now, it stays labelled as a claim, not a confirmed step.
