Reported Warning Labels on PS5 Boxes Spell Out Sony's Disc-Free Future
PlayStation 5 console boxes may now carry a sticker that tells buyers exactly what Sony's shift away from discs will mean: from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be sold only as digital downloads.
An image of the alleged label surfaced on 5 August 2026, posted on X by content creator Behind the Games. The sticker reads: "From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this console." VGC
As of the report, no other users had authenticated the image, and it was unclear whether the label appears on all PS5 variants or only some.
The timeline on the sticker matches what Sony already announced publicly. On 1 July 2026, the company used its official PlayStation Blog to confirm that physical disc production for new games would end in January 2028. PlayStation Blog Games already released, or released before that date in disc format, would remain unaffected.
Since that July announcement, the decision has drawn pushback from players who prefer physical media — discs that can be lent, resold, or played without an internet connection. Sony CFO Lin Tao acknowledged the backlash for the first time during an earnings results Q&A, saying the company would "cautiously move forward" with the transition. Sony also said it has been in talks with retailers about the disc-free future, and suggested that US retailers may still sell digital download codes in physical boxes. VGC
The PlayStation 5 has shipped in two models since its 2020 launch: one with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive and a Digital Edition without one. A warning label on the box would be aimed at buyers of the disc-drive version — the people most directly affected by the 2028 cutoff.
For now, the label remains unverified. What is confirmed is Sony's policy: discs stop rolling off the production line for new releases after January 2028, and every PS5 sold before then will still play the discs players already own.
