Taylor Swift says friends' stories inspired 'Patient Zero'

Taylor Swift says a conversation among friends sparked “Patient Zero”, the first single from “The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore”. She outlined the story behind the song to Capital FM, in remarks a spokesperson for Swift confirmed to Billboard she shared with the station Billboard. The song is one of four newly recorded tracks on the extended edition.
Swift said the idea came from a gathering where a friend said she had been contacted by her ex’s new girlfriend. The new girlfriend asked for guidance about experiences she shared with the man. Swift said others in the room then said similar outreach had happened to them.
She said she wrote “Patient Zero” from the perspective of the ex who had been through it before. The narrator takes the call. She answers with the benefit of hindsight.
The deluxe set adds “Babylon”, “Pink Clouding” and “Cleveland!” alongside “Patient Zero”. The Associated Press reported on 24 September 2026 that Swift had announced the extended version of her 2025 album with four new tracks Associated Press. The original “The Life of a Showgirl” spent 12 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the United States album chart. Swift plans to premiere the video for “Patient Zero” at the 2026 MTV VMAs on 27 September. She directed the video, which co-stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. Swift is nominated 13 times at the ceremony, organised by MTV, and is slated to receive the inaugural Artist Director Honor.
Her official website announces “Patient Zero From The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore Available Now”. Two vinyl variants, billed as the “Reflected Light Version” and the “His Halo Version”, were listed as available for 24 hours, while supplies last. Her official store lists each vinyl at 13.00 US dollars and the standard digital download of “Patient Zero” at 0.99 US dollars. The store also offers “The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore” as a digital download.
