Dakota Johnson will star in Taylor Swift's new music video for "Patient Zero."

The video will have its world premiere during the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday. Swift announced the plan on Thursday, Sept. 24, according to Variety. It puts a familiar film face at the centre of a tightly organised rollout.

Swift revealed Johnson's casting in a 13-second sneak peek. The clip gives the first clear look at Johnson in character, though no plot details were shared.

A separate tease aired the same day. About 10 seconds of footage played on "CBS Mornings" on Thursday, Sept. 24, according to USA Today. The VMAs broadcast will host the full world premiere, as Deadline reported.

Johnson spoke about the role on Thursday evening. She was attending the red carpet premiere of "Verity" in London when she discussed appearing in the video. The project links one of Hollywood's most watched actors with one of pop's biggest releases.

The announcement caps a busy week. Swift unveiled "Patient Zero" as a single on Tuesday. She then announced "The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore" on Wednesday.

The Encore is an expanded version of her album "The Life of a Showgirl." It adds four new tracks: "Patient Zero," "Cleveland!," "Pink Clouding" and "Babylon." Swift's choice makes "Patient Zero" both a single and the entry point to the longer edition.

For fans, this means a fast payoff. Single on Tuesday. Album news on Wednesday. Casting reveal and TV tease on Thursday. Full video on Sunday.

Swift's official shop is also offering two limited vinyl variants. 'Patient Zero (Reflected Light Version)' and 'Patient Zero (His Halo Version)' are each listed as available for 24 hours, while supplies last, according to Taylor Swift's official site. Vinyl in this context means a collectable record pressing, often with alternate artwork or audio mixes.

The site also lists Swift as director of the 'Opalite' music video, produced by Taylor Swift Productions Inc. and Merman. That credit offers background on her recent habit of directing her own visuals.
