Waite's unbeaten 73 puts Worcestershire 329 runs clear of Derbyshire

Worcestershire lead Derbyshire by 329 runs going into the penultimate day at New Road, after Matthew Waite’s unbeaten 73 dragged the second innings back from collapse.
Worcestershire made 214 in the first innings and reached 203-9 in the second. Derbyshire replied with 88 all out, leaving Worcestershire firmly in control after the second day’s play on 25 September, according to BBC Sport.
It did not look that way at 88-7. Derbyshire seamer Muhammad Abbas tore through the top order for the second time in the match. He finished with 5-63 in the first innings and 4-63 in the second, nine wickets in all after a marathon 20-over spell bowled straight through from either side of tea.
Jake Libby went first, given lbw — out because the ball would have hit the stumps — for 13 to Abbas. Nick Potts then removed Dan Lategan and Rehaan Edvalath, both caught behind, edged through to the wicketkeeper. Henry Cullen also fell caught behind off Abbas for his fourth wicket of the innings.
Waite should have gone cheaply. He was dropped twice by Martin Andersson at second slip, the catching position beside the keeper, both times off Abbas. Then, on 48, he was caught at long-leg only to be called back when replays showed Potts had overstepped for a no-ball, an illegal delivery that cancels the dismissal.
He made Derbyshire pay. Waite reached fifty off 97 balls, his sixth Division Two fifty of the summer, and finished the day on 73 not out. The runs came with urgency when it mattered. Short balls were pulled. Loose balls were driven.
Tom Taylor helped him turn the innings around. The pair added 51 together before Taylor was run out for 18 by sharp fielding from Yousaf bin Naeem. Ben Gibbon then stuck around for 21 in support of Waite as Worcestershire pushed past 200.
Earlier, Worcestershire’s bowlers had set up the lead. Allison took 5-22 and Taylor 3-27 to bowl Derbyshire out for 88. Madsen’s 40 was the only resistance of note in a first innings that never got going.
Derbyshire had won the toss and chosen to field at New Road, Worcester, where play in this Rothesay County Championship match started at 10:30 local time, according to the ECB. The game is scheduled for 24-27 September 2026.
What makes this stand out is how quickly the mood shifted. Derbyshire did almost everything right with the ball. Abbas led the attack superbly. But three missed chances for Waite have left them facing a huge chase on a wearing late-season pitch.
